Frequently Asked Questions
Framing and Display Ideas
Choosing the right-sized frame for your printed photo is simple. It’s all about measuring the width and height of the print and matching it with a frame that shares the same dimensions. For example, if you are looking to frame an 8x10-inch photo, an 8x10-inch frame will be the smart choice. However, if you’re using a mat board in the back of the frame, you will want a frame that is two to four inches bigger than the photo.
Glossy glass is the glass surface you typically associate with photo frames. While it is clear, it does reflect a significant amount of light. It also provides minimal UV protection which means your photos may fade over time. Invisible glass keeps reflections to a bare minimum to the extent that it often looks like there is no glass there. It also filters about 70% of UV rays, so your photos will thank you for it.
This means that you have a standard 11-inch by 14-inch photo frame with a mat board inside, which enables you to fit an 8x10-inch photo inside perfectly. The mat board provides a decorative border around the image and prevents the photo from making contact with the glass.
These are some of the most common photo framing mistakes:
- Using a too-narrow mat board in your photo frame.
- Choosing a frame that competes for attention with the image inside of it.
- Mounting a tiny frame on a large wall for optimal scale.
- Matching the frame to the room decor - you’ll want to match the frame to the photo first.
If you’re wondering how to arrange photo frames on sideboard surfaces like an expert, these 5 simple design tips will help bring out your inner interior designer:
- Place your largest frame at the back and place the smaller frames in front.
- Group items in odd amounts - 3 is the magic number - as this is most appealing to the eye.
- Use a variety of frame designs. Curated Frames offers several different colours and finishes.
- Accessorise with items of differing heights, like vases, plants and coffee table books.
- Decide whether you want to go symmetrical for a more formal look, or asymmetrical for a more casual aesthetic.
A gallery wall is a specifically curated display of framed photos, often with a chosen theme, hung up for display on a single wall. Common themes include family, travel or pets.
The gallery wall is an often effective way to create a cohesive and high-impact visual statement out of a collection of individual pictures. It works because you can personalise the gallery to your preferred theme and build the gallery on almost any wall in your home.
A framed print is a photo printed on photo paper and encased in a frame typically made of wood, metal or synthetic materials. A canvas print is not framed and displays your printed image on a durable canvas surface. With a canvas print, you can either have the sides of the image wrap around the edges of the canvas or mirror the image sides on the edges so you don’t lose any detail.
The first step is to measure the opening or cardboard backing of the frame (not its exterior) and cut the photo to match those dimensions. Always use a sharp craft knife (safely!) and a cutting mat to ensure you’re left with clean, straight edges. Make sure you measure twice and mark the measurements on the back of the print rather than on the image side.
If you can, always leave a slight border of 0.5-1 inch around the image to allow for ample space for mounting. Thankfully, when you order printing and framing with Curated Frames, we’ll always ensure your picture size perfectly matches the frame.
Products & Framing
Curated Frames’ picture frames come in rectangular, square, panoramic and paper (A1 to A4) sizes.
Our frames are designed and hand-made in Italy.
Curated Frames offers picture frames in black or white as well as frames in an oak finish. We use the finest gesso primer on our black and white frames, while our oak frames are made in one piece from premium-quality Ayous timber and European Oak veneer.
Protect your photos behind a pane of glossy or invisible glass. The glossy glass is a 2 mm-thick pane of standard clear glass. It will protect your photos from dust, but not from UV rays.
If you choose the invisible glass option, your photos will sit behind a museum-quality UltraVue® UV70 water white glass pane that practically eliminates reflections and filters up to 70% of UV rays.
Printing & Artwork
You can upload your favourite images for printing with our user-friendly online image uploading tool. Once you decide whether you want to frame your images as well, and the size and style of frame you want, you can preview the image before you commit to your order.
When you upload your phone photo online to order your printing and framing, our special online upload tool will only accept images that are able to print at a minimum of 100 pixels per inch (PPI). Most smartphones will comfortably meet this benchmark, if not exceed it, so your phone photo should be good enough for printing at any size.
